Here’s all you need to know about the biggest game releases of June and July 2024…

Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance

Available on PC, PS5, PS4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One from Friday 14 June

As with so many gaming re-releases, the word “definitive” is usually attached when it drops back in the world. So, coming at you is – you’ve guessed it – the definitive version of the critically acclaimed Shin Megami Tensei V, expanded with a new storyline featuring new locations, demons, and choices to make that will dictate the fate of all existence. No pressure there, then.

Monster Hunter Stories

Available on PC, PS4 and Nintendo Switch from Friday 14 June

This spin-off from the main Monster Hunter series first released in Europe in 2017 gets the next-gen spit-and-polish as you move from the role of Hunter to the job of raising monsters as a Rider. It’s a charming RPG with a surprising emotional heft as you build bonds with the beasts. Can’t get enough of it? Its sequel Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings Of Ruin debuts on PlayStation 4 on the same day well.

Still Wakes The Deep

Available on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S from Tuesday 18 June

If you’ve been sleeping too soundly recently, then boy, do we have the game for you. This first-person horror game sees you isolated on an oil rig in the North Sea. Oh, and there’s something onboard. Cool. With danger and scares around every corner, you’ll be double- and triple-checking that the front door is locked every night you play. Good horror games that thrill like this are a rarity, so jump in. And then jump out of your skin.

Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree

Available on PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One from Friday 21 June

This has been billed as a DLC expansion to Elden Ring – the critically acclaimed and best game of 2022 – but it’s far from your usual DLC pack. It’s a huge content drop. You might have expected it to be big (it has been two years in the making), but the sense of scale, size and ambition here is off the charts. With a new story set in the Land of Shadow, you’ll find mystery, dungeons, plus new enemies, weapons and equipment.

The Elder Scrolls Online: Gold Road

Available on PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One from Saturday 22 June

The Elder Scrolls Online may have launched 10 years ago in 2014, but it shows no signs that it’s slowing down, with its eighth chapter. Gold Road is a direct sequel to Necrom and features more than 30 hours of new content. But its biggest headline is that this expansion introduces the new Scribing system, allowing you to create your own handmade abilities and spells (a popular feature from other Elder Scrolls games).

Super Monkey Ball Banana Rumble

Available on Nintendo Switch from Tuesday 25 June

If you grew up with Super Monkey Ball in the early noughties (RIP GameCube), then Banana Rumble is cause for celebration. Even if you didn’t, you’re going to love the 16-player online mayhem across 5 game modes. As always, expect gameplay that is easy to pick up and play, yet rewards patient practice to build up your skills. Adventure Mode across 200-all new stages lets you team up with 3 friends.

Riven

Available on PC from Tuesday 25 June

1997 gave us many things. New Labour won the General Election. Katrina and the Waves brought it home in the Eurovision Song Contest. Channel 5 launched. Narrative puzzle-adventure Riven was also a big hit. Built from the ground up and expanded from the award-winning original game, journey through a world filled with surreal islands as you take on cunning puzzles. Also available on VR platforms.

Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD

Available on Nintendo Switch from Thursday 27 June

Before Luigi’s Mansion, Mario’s brother was exactly that – the brother. But he broke out from the shadows by plunging himself into the shadows by tackling ghosts in a haunted house. Now its peerless Nintendo 3DS sequel (previously called Dark Moon) has been given the Nintendo Switch HD treatment. Vacuum up spooks and recover the missing pieces of the Dark Moon to restore peace to the valley.

Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition

If you’re as addicted to watching speedrunning videos of expert gamers ploughing through levels of games as we are, then this one is for you.
