It’s crunch time in the MotoGP championship and the Champions League groups this month – plus Premier League football, rugby from the Premiership and European Champions Cup, NBA, UFC and more

By Chris Miller, Feature Writer

Do you feel the need? The need for speed? You’re very much in luck then, because TNT Sports brings you the high-octane events of MotoGP racing on Sundays throughout the year. And this month it’s the sure-to-be-epic climax to the 2023 season, as the leading riders battle it for glory on the tracks in Qatar and Spain.

It’s time for rugby union fans to get excited too, because not only does what’s already a fascinating Premiership season continue with live coverage on TNT Sports, but the European Champions Cup also starts in the coming weeks. The finest teams from England, Ireland, Wales, Scotland, France and South Africa – yes, it’s in Europe for rugby purposes – will be competing for the biggest prize in club rugby from 8 December.

It’s getting towards crunch time in the UEFA Champions League group stage, as the continent’s elite strive for the points that’ll see them involved past Christmas. The other European competitions are going strong too – plus of course there’s Premier League football, with Arsenal, Manchester United and Liverpool all featuring in live games, as well as National League, Serie A, Ligue 1 and A-League action.

TNT Sports is also the new home of the NBA, where you can see the world’s tallest pro athletes pulling off gravity-mocking feats of skill and power. And with international hockey, UFC, boxing, cricket, Aussie Rules football and more, it’s another fantastic month of live action on your TNT Sports channels.

Remember, you can follow all the live action on TNT Sports wherever you are in the UK, as long as there’s WiFi, 3G or 4G, thanks to Virgin TV Go. Football: Premier League

Manchester United finished a place above Newcastle United last season and if they want to do so again this term, they’ll need to buck their ideas up, frankly. A good place for the Red Devils to start would be with a win at St James’s Park and, although Newcastle have recovered from a slightly iffy start to the campaign, the demands of the Champions League have begun to take a toll via injury and fatigue. This match is harder to call than it might look at first glance.

Ahead of that you can see Brentford, with their excellent record of catching out the top teams, at home to Arsenal. Later in December Roy Hodgson will be aiming to get one over on Jürgen Klopp when his Palace side host title chasers Liverpool.

Football: UEFA Champions League

European champions Manchester City have cruised through their group so easily, qualifying for the knockouts with two games to spare, that we’re wondering if some sort of handicap system should be introduced. Perhaps Ederson should have to play with his hands tied behind his back, or Jack Grealish with his hair flopping into his eyes? With progress secured, we might at least see some unorthodox team selections at home to Leipzig and away in Belgrade.

While Arsenal are on the brink of qualification too after four games, it’s looking far trickier for Newcastle, Celtic and Manchester United. Despite their insanely tough group, Newcastle probably have the best chance although they’ll probably need at least four points (which means getting a result in Paris), while Celtic simply have to win both their matches and hope Atlético do the same.

Man Utd are in a three-way battle for second behind Bayern: a defeat at Galatasaray, who have already beaten them at Old Trafford, would send United out. Coach Erik ten Hag says he and his team are “fighters”. It’s time to make good on that claim.

Football: UEFA Europa League

Liverpool were making easy work of their Europa League group until a lethargic performance caused them to lose to Toulouse (try saying it five times fast). That’s made Group E a little more unpredictable ahead of the final fixtures. There’s plenty of jeopardy and intrigue elsewhere too, particularly in Group B, where the teams have all been taking points off each other. Brighton face a tough trip to Athens to play AEK, whobeat them at the Amex, but Roberto De Zerbi’s stylish team are always capable of pulling off a result.

After beating Sparta Prague, Rangers will aim to carry the momentum into another home win that could see them qualify, while Group A leaders West Ham – Conference League holders and European veterans these days, of course – will progress with a point in Serbia. Last month we described this competition as “delightfully tumultuous” and we see no reason to change our minds about that.

Football: UEFA Europa Conference League

After an early defeat at Legia Warsaw, Aston Villa have had to dig deep in their Conference League games, but ahead of the return match against Legia they’re well placed to qualify. Under Unai Emery they’ve been increasingly impressive and we’d back them not only to progress to the knockouts but to go a long way in this competition. It’s been tougher for Barry Robson’s Aberdeen, who are already out, but will no doubt be fighting for pride as they go to Finland.

Football: National League

It was in early October that, after years of financial instability and existential uncertainty, Southend United were finally saved thanks to the confirmation of an investment from an Australian consortium. The Shrimpers celebrated with four league wins in a row and although they’re still in the bottom half of the table owing to a 10-point deduction, they’re definitely upwardly mobile. On 18 November they meet Chesterfield, who are favourites for promotion (and fresh from FA Cup heroics against League One Portsmouth), live on TNT Sports. Tune in to find out if the Southend feelgood story can continue.

AFC Fylde are, at the time of writing, the only team to beat Chesterfield this season and you can see them in National League action at home to Dorking, as well as Barnet’s clash with Oldham.

Football: Serie A

This month marks the 250th time the derby d’Italia between Juventus and Inter Milan has been contested (in official matches, not counting some off-brand games, including the intriguingly named Palla d’Oro Moët et Chandon in 1910). Juve are ahead with 112 wins to Inter’s 76 but, of course, that counts for nothing on the day. Both teams have started the season well, although Inter have managed to stay ahead of their great rivals from Turin since week 2. It’s always a fascinating match-up and often one that has a significant impact on the title race.

The derby is live on TNT Sports on 26 November, and a week later you can also see Inter’s visit to champions Napoli, along with an abundance of other top Serie A matches.

Football: Ligue 1

Remember when Nice won four league titles in a decade? Probably not, because it was in the 1950s. Since then, give or take the odd Coupe de France win, it’s been thin times for les Aiglons. But after a bumpy start to their new era under the ownership of Jim Ratcliffe (the plastics tycoon who is also looking to invest in Man Utd), the team has come together this term under coach Francesco Farioli. They’re not exactly free-scoring – there have been a lot of 1-0s and goalless draws so far – but at the time of writing, they’re Ligue 1’s last unbeaten team.

As with any title challenger in French football these days, the big question is: do they have the resources to see off PSG? Well, they’ve already beaten them once, 3-2 at Parc des Princes (the only match in which Nice have scored more than two goals) so they’ll be confident of keeping the momentum going. Check them out at home to Toulouse this month on TNT Sports.

Football: A-League Men

It was a miserable season for Melbourne Victory in 2022/23 as the four-time A-League champions and perennial contenders slumped to 11th place – and even worse, local rivals Melbourne City finished top. But every new season is a new dawn and Victory began this one with, er, victories over Sydney FC and Newcastle, giving supporters hope that the dark days are over. With former City striker Bruno Fornaroli bagging six goals in three games, they got off to a real flyer, and this month they travel to Macarthur and Central Coast as they aim to stay among the challengers.

Football: A-League Women

One way to make your ground the proverbial “difficult place to go” is to locate it in the world’s most isolated city. Perth Glory kicked off their 2023/24 campaign with two home victories against Western United and Newcastle Jets, who both had to travel around 4,000km (actually to two different grounds, thanks to overrunning renovations at the HBF Stadium). Then a win at Canberra put Perth top and with their front three of Grace Jale, Susan Phonsongkham and Englishwoman Millie Farrow firing on all cylinders, they’ll aim to stay there.

The Glory have never won the A-League championship, finishing runners-up three times. This month you can see them at home to Melbourne Victory and then dealing with one of the longest away trips in world football: 5,300km to play Wellington Phoenix, which includes a 6½-hour flight. If they can cope with that, it really could be Perth’s year.

Rugby Union: European Champions Cup

Last season culminated in an absolute classic of a final between Leinster and La Rochelle, which the French side won by a single point thanks to Georges-Henri Colombe’s 71st-minute try converted by Antoine Hastoy, which silenced the Aviva Stadium crowd. It was heartbreaking for Leinster, who had lost to the same team in 2022’s final.

And wouldn’t you know it, the first round of European Champions Cup fixtures features another rematch, as Leinster visit Stade Marcel-Deflandre and try to extract some measure of revenge. Can anyone stop les Maritimes on their way to a hat-trick of titles? The Dubliners have as good a chance as any. Also on the opening weekend, Saracens are in Pretoria to face the Bulls, while Cardiff face a daunting trip to Toulouse.

Rugby Union: Premiership

The World Cup overlapping with the new Premiership season led to some unexpected early results that saw traditional contenders Saracens and Leicester in the bottom half after four rounds of fixtures. Exeter in particular took advantage of their rivals’ slow start with some big wins – putting 65 on the board against Sarries –  and you can follow their efforts to stay at the top, with the Chiefs’ home match against Gloucester and away game in Newcastle both live on TNT Sports.

You can also see if champions Saracens can haul themselves up the Premiership table when they visit in-form Harlequins on 18 November, and then in their home match against Northampton at the start of December. And there’s plenty more Premiership action on TNT Sports over the coming weeks to keep fans satisfied.

Motorsport: Rallying + Touring

The World Rally Championship heads to Japan for the final stage of the 2023 with the title already won, after the Estonian team of Ott Tänak and Martin Järveoja claimed a crucial second-place finish at the Central European Rally. Britain’s Elfyn Evans and Scott Martin crashed while trying to score crucial points – and now they face a battle to hold on to the runners-up position, after Thierry Neuville and Martin Wydaeghe put the pressure on them with a win. Tune in for four days of top-class, nail-biting rally driving in Hokkaido.

Supercars pace-setter Brodie “Bush” Kostecki may have snuck off to the US for a bit of NASCAR action mid-season, but it didn’t knock him off his stride: he’s finished first or second in eight of the past 10 races. With a lead of 131 points, only a serious error over the final weekend in Adelaide can hand the title to his rival Shane van Gisbergen.

England’s men don’t have long to lick their World Cup wounds before they’re in the Caribbean for a white-ball series against the West Indies: three ODIs and five T20s before Christmas, starting on 3 December in Antigua. There are a few experimental picks in the squad, including Test specialists Ollie Pope and Zak Crawley as well as the uncapped Hampshire seam bowler John Turner; whoever plays, they’ll be aiming to stake a claim to a starting place in 2024.

TNT Sports also has live coverage of the Pakistan women’s team’s tour of New Zealand, beginning with three T20s and visiting Dunedin, Queenstown and Christchurch.

MMA

The most successful Scottish MMA fighter ever? Well, it’s arguable – Joanne Wood would probably have a good shout – but there’s no doubt that Airdrie’s Paul Craig has had a terrific career so far. Unbeaten in BAMMA, he’s racked up the “Performance of the Night” accolades since joining the UFC, and scored yet another in his first fight at middleweight when he saw off André Muniz in London in July. This month he’s headlining against Brendan Allen in Las Vegas and with both fighters ranked in the top 15 in their category, the winner will hope a title shot isn’t far away.

At the start of December it’s a lightweight clash that takes top billing as Beneil Dariush faces Arman Tsarukyan, before the UFC stages an event in Shanghai for the first time in six years, with Chinese bantamweight Song Yadong due to take on the US’s Chris Gutiérrez in the headline bout.

Basketball: NBA

The Philadelphia 76ers are one of the most venerable teams in the NBA, founded in 1946, but success has been thin on the ground in recent years. There was a divisional title in 2021, but they haven’t reached the NBA Finals since 2001, and haven’t won the championship since 1983. So fans will be delighted (and perhaps a little shocked) by their start to this season, when a single-point loss to the Bucks in the opening game was followed by a string of impressive victories. Center Joel Embiid has been racking up the points and rebounds, with plenty of assists from point guard Tyrese Maxey.

The Sixers are in action live on TNT Sports multiple times this month, so tune in to see if they can keep that form going. In the Western Conference, defending NBA champs the Denver Nuggets have set the pace, and you can see them at home to the Clippers and on the road in Cleveland.

Basketball: EuroCup

We’re seeing the benefit of experience in the London Lions’ European adventures. The first time they qualified via the BBL, they didn’t make the group stages. Last season, they made it through but won fewer than half their group games and lost in the first knockout stage. This season, though, it’s a different story.

Although they were seeded last in their 10-team group, the Lions won their first three away games as well as scoring a home win over Venice. They have qualification well within their grasp, and there was even an MVP of the Round award for point guard Matt Morgan after their 100-94 win in Hamburg. You heard it here first (possibly): the Lions are a growing force in European basketball.

Hockey: FIH Pro League

The world’s top hockey competition is back, and both GB’s men’s and women’s team feature in the opening action of the season, which sees the British and Dutch teams travel to Santiago del Estero in Argentina to play a mini round-robin with their hosts.

Britain’s men finished runners-up to the Netherlands last season, so they’ll be looking to get one over on their rivals in the early stages. The Netherlands were also women’s champions, but GB trailed in a fair way behind them – so captain Hollie Pearne-Webb will be just as determined, if not more so, to lead her team to an early success.

Badminton

The China Masters in Shenzhen is this month’s big tournament on the BWF Tour, a Super 750 competition with $1 million in prize money up for grabs. It’ll be the first staging of the event since 2019 (for, you know, reasons) and local fans will be hoping their faves can get back to winning ways, after the last two men’s titles went to Japan’s Kento Momota while Marcus Fernaldi Gideon and Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo of Indonesia took the men’s doubles at both events. The women’s doubles were won by overseas players too – although China’s Chen Yufai holds the women’s singles title.

Ahead of that tournament there’s the Japan Masters in Kumamoto, and it’s followed by the Syed Modi International in Lucknow as the season counts down to the big one: the BWF Tour Finals, starting on 13 December in Hangzhou.

Squash

The Hong Kong Open is one of just four Platinum events on the PSA Tour, which means winning it brings not just prestige but a big chunk of cash too – it’s the calendar’s second most lucrative tournament. That’s why you’ll see the crème de la crème of world squash in Tsim Sha Tsui, where Mostafa Asal and Diego Elias played out an epic five-set men’s singles final last year.

Asal, nicknamed “The Raging Bull” for his fiery on-court demeanour, also beat Elias to the 2022/23 World Tour Finals championship so the Peruvian will be desperate for some payback. Women’s world No1 Nour El Sherbini will also be on the revenge trail, having lost the final to Hania El Hammamy.
